Meet the Phils at Mountain Mercantile

Oct 7, 2026 | Education, Mountain Events, Running Springs

Local author and artist Phil Yeh will be appearing at Mountain Mercantile in Running Springs on Saturday, Oct. 24. Yeh will be signing his books, including Places, a book of 126 watercolors of places he has been during his 41-year world tour; and Dinosaurs Across America, his graphic novel that teaches U.S. history and geography in a fun way for all ages. It was picked as one of the top 25 graphic novels to promote lifelong reading by School Library Journal and was a Children’s Choice Award winner by the Children’s Book Council and the International Reading Association.

Phil Ortiz

Yeh wrote and drew one of the first American graphic novels in the U.S. in 1977 (Even Cazco Gets the Blues) and is today often called the Godfather of the American Graphic Novel.  In 1985, Yeh created Cartoonists Across America & The World to use art and humor to call attention to the global literacy crisis. Cartoonists Across America has crossed North America more than 200 times, painting more than 1,800 colorful literacy murals in 49 states, three Canadian provinces and 15 countries.

Last spring Yeh painted a mural with the students at Charles Hoffman Elementary School in Running Springs. He continues to speak at schools around the world. For more about Phil Yeh and his work visit wingedtiger.com.

Local artist and animator Phil Ortiz will be joining Yeh at this event. Over his more than 40 years as a professional artist, Ortiz has worked on everything from daily newspaper comic strips (Bugs Bunny) to layouts and character design for animated cartoons including The Simpsons. Some of the notable characters Phil designed for the Simpsons include Flanders, Otto, Herman, Lou and Eddie, Ralph and Apu. He was the principal penciler for Simpsons comics.

Ortiz also worked at Hanna Barbera, Warner Bros., Marvel Productions (Muppet Babies), Klasky-Csupo and Disney Publishing. Ortiz will be drawing characters he has worked on and will also be available to “Simpsonize” people, sketching you as you would look if you were a Simpsons character. He will also have a few comics available for purchase.
