Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott — Chilly Winds

Nov 4, 2026 | Uncle Mott

Man, that sure was a humdinger of a windstorm we had recently, a near record “24-bagger.”

What that means is that I ended up raking and bagging 24 of those 33-gallon trash bags of oak leaves and pine needles that have been raining down on my backyard, front yard and deck for the past two or three months in order to keep my property what the Fire Department and Fire Safe Council consider “Fire-Safe.”

In fact. the wind was blowing so hard that I had to replace the bearings in my anemometer. How’s your anemometer? For the folks in San Berdoo, an anemometer is a device that measures wind speed, not a thermometer the nurse uses to stick where the sun don’t shine.

And it was a chilly wind at that. Right about now I wish I was headed to sunny South Florida, where those chilly winds don’t blow.

Oh, I’m goin’ where those chilly winds don’t blow. Gonna find a true love, that is where I want to go, out where them chilly winds don’t go. Wish I was a headlight on a westbound train, I’d shine my light on a cool Colorado rain, out where them chilly winds don’t blow. (“Chilly Winds” – Kingston Trio – 1962 – Penned by John Stewart)

And another thing – If I was in sunny South Florida, my power wouldn’t have gone out for eight hours like it did the other day and like it does nearly every time there’s a Santa Ana wind or snowstorm because the powerlines would have been firmly planted underground, which is where they should have been in the first place.

But that’s not what I brought you here for. What I brought you here for is to tell you about the heinous practice of insurance companies that will not insure your home and surrounding property if you have what they consider too many pine needles, weeds and autumn leaves on your private property.  In fact, my insurance company sent a nosey inspector to take pictures of my private property to make sure it qualified to be insured. So far, I have lucked out; hope you do, too.

Keep it flyin,’

Uncle Mott

With Halloween coming up in just a couple of days, let’s take a look at the history of this spooky holiday. Though it’s been celebrated for over a century in the United States, it’s not in any other area of the globe. I have an old friend who used to reside in Great...

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Summer Rain

I guess I don’t have to tell you that it was a long, hot summer with hardly any rain, ‘cept for that flash flood that snookered many of our mountain communities last week. I sure wish it would rain some more, just like it did in the days of yore when my lover was...

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: What’s New Pussycat

Early this morning, Albert the Kat (He’s the good cat) was being chased, back-and-forth, across my bed at 3 a.m. by Cousin Rusty the Kat, the latest addition to the Katz family, yet another orange and white cat that thinks it should be treated like royalty. To tell...
