What would have been the 19th VFW Post 9624 Auxiliary trout derby is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 4 beginning at 7 a.m.; the last weigh-in will be at 1:30 p.m.

“This would be the 19th year,” said organizer Jeff Yoder, “but with COVID we weren’t able to hold it in 2020 so, officially, it’s the 18th annual derby.”

Tickets for the derby are $20 and are available at Goodwin’s Market, 7-Eleven, Lake Drive Hardware and the boat house at Lake Gregory. Tickets do not include parking or fishing passes.

In the past, Yoder noted, the derby has attracted 200 to 300 anglers. Prizes for the longest fish are awarded in three age groups: 3 to 9, 10 to 15 and 16 and up. So far, Yoder said, they have more than $3,000 in cash and prizes to award.

Following the last weigh-in, trophies will be awarded at the boat launch at 2 p.m. Participants must be present to be eligible to win cash and prizes.

“I really enjoy seeing the kids win a large cash prize,” Yoder said.
