With this year’s 66th annual Grammy Awards presentation just around the corner on Sunday, Feb. 4, I felt this would be a good time to comment on this year’s Grammy nominations and, perhaps, offer some opinions on who is or should be worthy of winning this prestigious award. Keep in mind, I am a bit opinionated.
I dig rock ‘n roll music, and love to get the chance to play and sing it. I figure it’s about the happiest sound goin’ down today. The message may not move me or mean a great deal to me but, hey, it feels so good to say. (I Dig Rock ‘n’ Roll – Peter, Paul & Mary – 1967)
Let’s, then, take a peek at this year’s top nominees: Rickie Lee Jones has come a long way since “Chuck E’s in Love,” with her latest hit “Pieces of Treasure,” which is nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Nominated for Record of the Year are Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish (a rare two-of-a-kind), Olivia Rodrigo (loved her on The Late Show), Taylor Swift (is Taylor Swift?…you betcha! I told ya I was opinionated) and Colbert’s ultra-cool, former bandleader, Jon Baptiste.
Album of the Year nominees include World Music Radio by Jon Baptiste, The Record by Boygenius and Endless Summer Vacation by Miley Cyrus. Song of the Year contenders include “A & W” by Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift and “Kill Bill” by Rob Bisel, Carter Lang and Solana Rowe.
Best Rock Album nominees include But Here We Are by the Foo Fighters, 72 Seasons by Metallica and Starcatcher by Greta Van Fleet… Now, this is my kinda’ music.
I dig the Mamas and the Papas at the Trip Sunset Strip in L.A., and they got a good thing goin’ when the words don’t get in the way. And when they’re really wailing Michelle and Cass are sailin.’ Hey, they really nail me through the wall, yeah.
If you ever listen to KFRG 95.1 FM (Yes, I listen to the SoCal’s #1 country music station), I don’t need to tell you that women are beginning to dominate the airwaves with new talent like Lainey Wilson, whose collaboration with Jelly Roll is currently at the top of the charts. Not only can she sing, but she’s a good looker…he’s not.
I may enjoy country, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of what’s been labeled as “Yacht Rock,” which got its name from Christopher Cross’ “Sailing.” Some of my faves in this category are “Heart of the Night” and “Rose of Cimmaron” by Poco, “Baby, I Want to Make it With You” and “Aubrey” by Bread, some of the most beautiful love songs ever made. They’re definitely on my Valentine’s Day playlist.
I dig rock ‘n roll music, I could really get it on in that scene, I think I could say somethin’ if you know what I mean, but, if I say it, the radio won’t play it, unless I lay it between the lines…ba,ba,ba.ba,ba.ba,ba,ba,ba,ba,ba,baaa.
Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
