Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott – School’s Out

Jun 12, 2024 | Uncle Mott

Congratulations to all the members of the graduating class of 2024. It was a lot of hard work, but you finally made it, so give yourselves a pat on the back.

No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks, school’s out for the summer, out to fall, we might not come back at all. School’s out for forever. (“School’s Out” – Alice Cooper – 1972)

As much as I like Alice Cooper – I mean, how could you not admire a guy who’s best known for biting the head off of a live chicken during a stage show – I think he’s sending the wrong message when he says, “school’s out forever.”

Kids, listen to me, in today’s dire job market you’re going to need more than a high school diploma if you want to survive in today’s tough global economy. This is why your graduation ceremony is called a commencement (for those of you who were schooled in San Bernardino, “commencement” means beginning). That’s right, graduation is just the beginning of a lifelong adventure, a journey that should include continuing education. Since there’s very few jobs out there right now, especially in the mountaintop communities… unless you like bussing dirty dishes or you are a certified lifeguard.

Since there aren’t a lot of high-paying jobs right now, you may as well continue your education while you still can, before you’re saddled with mortgage payments, parental responsibilities and a lifetime of debt.

Oh sure, not everyone is cut out for or can even afford a four-year college, but that’s why we have two-year community colleges. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to go there, and you can get most of your required classes before transferring to a four-year college. In fact, I went to one called Orange Coast College… also known as “Surf Tech” for two years (it was kinda like high school with ashtrays). Then I transferred to Chapman College (now Chapman University), where I got my bachelor’s degree in business and economics and a lifetime, standard secondary teaching credential.

And don’t knock trade schools; my son went to one and now he makes more money than I did after four years of college. Actually, it took me five years but then I goofed off a lot. Take it from me kids: Don’t goof off too much, and definitely stay away from all the drugs and booze; they will only fry your brain and make it more difficult to be productive. So, congratulations, keep a stiff upper lip and have a wonderful and prosperous life.

We can’t salute ya, can’t find a flag. If that don’t suit ya that’s a drag. School’s out for summer, school’s out forever, I’m bored to pieces.

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Summer Rain

I guess I don’t have to tell you that it was a long, hot summer with hardly any rain, ‘cept for that flash flood that snookered many of our mountain communities last week. I sure wish it would rain some more, just like it did in the days of yore when my lover was...

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: What’s New Pussycat

Early this morning, Albert the Kat (He’s the good cat) was being chased, back-and-forth, across my bed at 3 a.m. by Cousin Rusty the Kat, the latest addition to the Katz family, yet another orange and white cat that thinks it should be treated like royalty. To tell...

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Our House

Well, we finally got through the summer heat spell without the horrible wildfires that often ravage the mountaintop communities this time of the year. Now it’s time to relax and enjoy what there is showing on the so-called “idiot box.” There are several TV shows that...
