First Friday at The Lake House not only features the work of exceptional artists but also benefits local charities, who receive a portion of the proceeds.
The Sept. 6 event will feature the work of painters Debra Holladay and Kelly Lingel.
“Painting allows me to converse with the lush cornucopia of the natural world: hue, pattern, glow, and shimmer,” Debra Holladay said. A lifelong painter and native Californian, Debra’s art career began at age 2 with a tube of red lipstick and her cooperative dog, followed by a crayon wall mural unsuccessfully hidden behind a chest of drawers.

Working both in the studio and in the field, Holladay’s paintings capture fleeting moments of the American experience which, on closer inspection, reward the viewer with small details often overlooked by the casual observer. Her passion for art and sense of wanderlust for the natural world have culminated in a series of plein air painting adventures which include a pack trip to Lake Ediza in the Eastern Sierras and trips to Canyon de Chelly, California’s gold rush country, Yosemite Valley, Lake Arrowhead, Joshua Tree National Park and the California coast.
Kelly Lingel knew from an early age she loved color and wanted to be an artist. She would spend hours alone painting and drawing. She was fortunate that her mother encouraged her creativity and she and her godmother would take her to art museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe. As a child, she studied art at the Asian Pacific Art Museum in Pasadena.
Lingel has worked as an elementary and secondary art teacher in the United States, Spain and Japan, where she was exposed to different artists and styles of aesthetics.
“Painting is the way I can best communicate,” Lingel said, “and when my paintings emotionally connect with the viewer, I feel honored to have made that intimate human connection.”
A portion of the proceeds from sales on Sept. 6 will benefit the Rim of the World Educational Foundation. Rim Ed supports the ROP/CTE classes – welding, woodworking, TV and video production, auto technology, graphic design – at Rim High; the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classes at Rim High and MPH Intermediate School; and Partnership with Schools grants at all six campuses in the school district.
