“It” is the biggest pine cone. The hunt is on for the longest sugar pine cone and the heaviest Coulter pine cone. Judging will take place this Saturday, Oct. 4 at this year’s Pine Cone Festival.
The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Rim Nordic, across from Snow Valley Mountain Resort (where there will be parking and a shuttle to the festival).
In addition to the big pine cone contest, there also be a pine cone craft contest. Make them at home and bring them to the festival or create right on site.
The Pine Cone Olympics always draw a huge crowd. There will be archery, a hoop toss and pine cone shot put with four age categories in each event for males and females.
New this year is a parade and costume contest for pooches. Dress your dog up as a first responder or in a forest theme and join in the fun.
Get to know your national forest by taking a nature walk. Using your trail guide, identify the trees and other environmental elements you will see.
As if that’s not enough, there will be a wide variety of vendors at the Pine Cone Festival. And there will be entertainment! The Mountain Fifes & Drums will open the festivities with additional music provides by Little Bear Valley Blues band and The Memory Makers – Rachel Murray on vocals and TJ Roger on piano.
