Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: “Raindrops”

Apr 23, 2026 | Uncle Mott

As I was driving up to the dump just before the rainstorm, all up and down Kuffel Canyon, those beautiful Dogwood Trees were in full bloom… Bow wow! Those blooming trees were so beautiful this year. Those dogwoods have been so bountiful, I guess ‘cause we didn’t get many storms this winter, although the ones we did get were very wet and drenching. Although it also seems like it never rained this winter. We had so many bright, sunshiny days.

As I continued driving, the wind began to blow and a couple of the blossoms began falling on me like white rain… (no, not like the shampoo), more like raindrops falling on my head.

Raindrops are falling on my head. And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed…
Nothing seems to fit… Those… raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling (
sung by BJ Thomas, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, 1969).

Those dogwood trees were swaying overhead and I wondered, if after this storm any of those blooms would still be attached. I was hoping they would.

As I was driving east, now that I could see over the rim, I saw that the storm was definitely blowing in. With that view from the rim, I had the feeling you could see forever …. it is amazing! However, that day the peaks of Saddleback Mountain were only poking through the clouds as the coast was already fogged in from the incoming storm.

While in that dump line, (nothing like a conga line by the way, since no one was shimmying, we were just stuck, sitting there), I looked to the north. The wind seemed to have blown clear all the smoke, smog and debris from the air. I felt like I could see for forever, enabling me to see all the way to the real Sierra Nevada mountains.

I can see for miles and miles, I can see for miles and miles, and miles and miles, oh yeah. (The Who, 1967).

After dumping the trash, I returned home and later that evening, those wet raindrops really began to fall, actual rain, and it was much wetter; indeed I could almost say it was raining cats and dogs… but I won’t…‘cause that is too obvious of a joke.

Ooh, I hear laughter in the rain, walking hand in hand with the one I love, Ooh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside. (Neil Sedaka, 1974.)

Keep it flying’,

Uncle Mott
