Let me tell ya, this was the Mayest May in many years, ya know. Ya know why they call it May? It’s becuz it may rain, it may snow and it may be 80 degrees. It did all of that this year.
Now that May is leaving and we are drifting into June, school will soon be out for the summer.
Here comes summer, gonna grab my girl and run away, now let the sun shine bright on my happy summer home and if she’s willing, we’ll go steady right away. (“Here Comes Summer” – Jerry Keller -1959)
I’d like to begin this week with a seasonal sorta rhyme that goes sorta like this: Spring has sprung and fall has fell,
now it’s summer and it’s hotter than…uh, um Heck, yeah, … that’s it … hotter than heck. Whew, got through that one without starting a riot! Summer’s arrival always brings us an annoying bug population, enough to keep an exterminator busy until the snow flies (hmm, you’re kidding, you mean there’s snowflies?) who’ve thunk!
That reminds me – we usually get a bountiful supply of flies every summer and we usually get a bountiful supply of deerflies… you’re kiddin, you don’t mean deer can fly, too. (Oh, I guess I forgot about Santa’s flying reindeer, never mind…) We also seem to have a bumper crop of mosquitos and mosquito hawks. I could use a bumper crop of mosquito hawks.
The only reason I mention this is cuz I just began my yearly weed-whacking extravaganza, and I usually get eaten alive by mosquitos. I guess I don’t have to tell ya the ants are on the march agin, too, and all those flyin’ ants you see, really ain’t ants they’re actually termites. I’m lucky, I’ve never had any problems with these pests…except for the time my brother put termites in my Lincoln Logs. Dang! My brother is such a childhood pest (Scuze me fer cussin’ Mom) By the way, “Mom always liked my brother best.” (Yes, I stole that from Tommy Smothers.)
Summertime does have its positive aspects. Some of my favorite summertime activities are backyard barbecues, road trips, outdoor concerts, goin to the beach, late night star-gazin’ and strollin’ through the woods with my honey.
Well, that’s a wrap for this week, see ya next week, same time, same station.
Here comes summer, feel her lips so close to mine. Here comes summer, when we meet her eyes both shine. It’s the greatest, let’s have summer all the time. Oh, let the sun shine bright on my happy summer home.
Keep it flyin,’
Uncle Mott
