The Crestline Lions drew the winning ticket for their raffle basket at their general meeting on Tuesday. May 26 at Leisure Shores in Crestline. The winning ticket was drawn by Marci Collar, a member of the Crest Forest Senior Center and supervisor at Leisure Shores where the Lions hold their monthly dinner meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
The Lions had a booth at the Crestline post office starting in the middle of February where they were selling tickets to the public to win the basket, and were there six days a week, through May. Ray and Catherine Johnson, plus many of the other club members, manned the table, weather permitting.
Some of the items in the gift basket were a two-night stay at Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa with a $100 voucher to BIN189. A handmade quilt with a horse theme was donated by the Dogwood Quilters. A Duffy boat pass, four all-day passes to Lake Gregory, three bottles of wine, an autographed historical book by Rhea Frances Tetley, $500 worth of gift cards and much, much more filled the basket to overflowing. The basket had a value of $2,034.
The Lions raised $4,660 from this fundraiser; the funds will be used for community donations and Lions projects and scholarships over the next few months. They support food drives, food giveaways and the food pantry, the schools, eye care and blindness education and community events. They run the Bingo games held the first Friday of each month at Leisure Shores to also fund their projects and donations.
The winner of the basket was Lion Kathleen Welsh. She was ill and was unable to attend the meeting, so she was extremely shocked when told of the win. This basket of items will bring a little joy to her life since she recently lost her husband, Andy. When presented with the winning basket full of items, by Catherine Johnson, Kathleen immediately began deciding and announcing the names of the many people who helped her during Andy’s illness and stating she was going to donate many of those items to them. Those thoughts of their support and the opportunity to thank them brought a great smile to her face and cheered up her spirits.
The Crestline Lions Club is growing in size. Crestline has had a Lions Club in the community since the 1940s. The more they follow their motto “We Serve,” the more community members are attracted to the club. The club happily inducted a new member during their May meeting. Local caterer Fred Keville made the decision to join the Crestline Lions Club and was inducted by Past District Governor Ken Reed. Plus, the Lions Club has received applications from two residents who want to be members and who will be inducted at the club’s installation of officers at the Elks Club on the top of Perris Hill in San Bernardino in June.
In July they will hold their annual Lions community appreciation day. During that afternoon it will be their “Free Hot Dog Giveaway Day” as a thank you to the Crestline community for all the support they give the Lions Club year-round. During that event they will set up a booth in the Goodwin’s Market parking lot and give out hot dogs and chips to anyone who wants them.
