Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Sealed With a Kiss

Jul 1, 2026 | Uncle Mott

I was reminiscing about the 60s recently, about how much fun it was in the summertime when school was finally out and how much fun it was to ride my bicycle through the orange-tree-lined road down to Corona del Mar to splash around in the ocean and swim out to a buoy. But now, after watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, I will never do that again, especially after learning that every time you jump in the ocean, there are hungry sharks

lurking, only a few feet away from you. Yikes! I’m lucky they were not hungry when I was there.

The sad part about summer vacation was always having to say goodbye to my high school sweetheart, for a while anyway.

Though we gotta say goodbye for the summer, darling I promise you this – I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter, sealed with a kiss. Yes, it’s gonna be a cold, lonely summer but I’ll fill the emptiness, I’ll send you all my dreams in a letter, sealed with a kiss. (“Sealed With a Kiss” – Brian Hyland – 1962)

Another summer, I did happen to meet a cute gal who was tanning nearby at the beach and she was sort of flirting with me. She was quite a “looker,” what with the skimpy swimming attire she was donning, though she was a bit nervous about being seen in public. However, I didn’t mind at all.

She was afraid to come out of the locker, she was as nervous as she could be. She was afraid to come out of the locker, she was afraid that somebody could see…Two, three, four; tell the people what she wore. It was an itsy-bitsy, teeny weenie, yellow, polka dot bikini, so into the locker, she wanted to stay. (“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” – Brian Hyland – 1960)

Seems like Brian was what you might call a “Two-Hit Wonder.” Anyway, it looks like the kids are already having a lot of fun this summer over at the Lake Gregory beaches, swimming and playing on the waterslide and those colorful, floating water toys. Undoubtedly, there are many others who, like me, had to bid adieu to their girlfriend or boyfriend for the summer. Seems like summer is shorter than it was when I was a lad. My, how time flies when you’re having fun. School may be back in season in a few weeks, but you can rest assured that this summer’s scenario will, once again, occur next year, as it has been for past generations.

I’ll see you in the sunlight, I’ll hear your voice everywhere. I’ll run to tenderly hold you, but darling you won’t be there. I don’t want to say goodbye for the summer, knowing the love we’ll miss. Oh, let us make a pledge to meet in September and seal it with a kiss.

Hope you have a safe and fun July 4th holiday weekend – America’s 250th anniversary – watching the fireworks over our beautiful Lake Gregory and Lake Arrowhead.

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott
