In response to limited options for local safe and responsible medication disposal, Rim Communities For Youth will now be distributing Deterra deactivation bags to all Rim communities.
The Deterra system deactivates prescription drugs, pills, patches, liquids, creams and films. Deterra renders them inert, unavailable for misuse and safe for the environment.
In a simple three-step process, a user deactivates the drugs by putting them in a Deterra pouch or container, adding water, shaking the puouch and throwing it away. This method of disposal keeps unwanted, unused and/or expired medications out of the wrong hands and out of the environment. Additionally, using Deterra is said to reduce the likelihood of overdose in homes by 60 percent.
While Rim Family Services is not a prescription disposal location, the agency is a distributor of Deterra deactivation bags. Community members may call the office at (909) 366-1800 or send an email to rcfycoalition@rimfamilyservices.org to schedule a time to pick up a bag. They may also visit the coalition booth at one of many community events.
Rim Communities For Youth is a local coalition based in Skyforest under Rim Family Services’ Environmental Prevention Program. Its mission is to reduce underage access to and use of drugs and alcohol. Additionally, the coalition serves as a resource to link community members with services such as treatment for substance abuse, addiction and counseling through many of its respected counterparts throughout the Rim Communities and beyond.
Rim Family Services is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
