Winter is apparently here, with the cold nights suddenly here after that heat spell. The trees are just beginning to turn colors and the smell of firewood burning in fireplace is in the air – and it’s only October.

The Crestline Lions Club is selling tickets for their Nov. 24 drawing for a cord of firewood, delivered. The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Their members have been seen sitting in Crestline next to the main Crestline post office most days of the week, offering an opportunity for each of you to have a chance to buy one of their tickets to get a cord of wood.

Currently a cord of firewood costs over $350 so the prize of a full cord of firewood, delivered, is an excellent way to save money this winter on heating costs. One year a person who won donated it to several others who he felt were also in great need so they could all share in his windfall.

Past Lions’ President Catherine Johnson said, “Our yearly firewood drawing greatly benefits the person who wins, in numerous ways. First, they receive an entire cord of aged firewood. Plus, this firewood can save them thousands of dollars in expensive gas or propane heating costs this coming winter, with those prices so expensive. And thirdly, if they wanted to buy firewood, this also saves them from needing to find the right local firewood dealer to buy from, and arranging for its delivery this winter.” This firewood is donated each year to the Lions Club by one of its members.

The money raised will be used to support the Lions’ many local projects supporting the community, foodbanks, the local schools and scholarships, eye care and their Lions International projects. In past years, they’ve dug out fire hydrants from snow and, during Snowmageddon, gave out food, shovels and jackets.

One year’s winner said the win was a gift from heaven, as he was worried about the cost of heating his home for his family all winter. He was very thankful they were able to stay warm all winter and spend that money that would have been spent on heating costs on food and other necessities.
