The 30 volunteers who participated in the community-wide cleanup day in Crestline beat the rain that started falling just after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

After the volunteers checked in with Matthew Philippe of the Lake Gregory Yacht Club and Marissa Maxcy of the Lake Gregory Company, they donned safety vests and picked up a trash bag and trash picker and headed out.

Philippe had a list of possible routes for folks to take. Some set out on foot, walking around the lake. Others drove up to Top Town, where they found a significant amount of discarded car parts.

The most common items found were cigarette butts and soda cans. The mother-daughter team of Mickey and Leilani Caballero found a lot of old fishing line as they walked by the lake’s edge. (Reminder to anglers: Take your old fishing line with you or toss it in a trash can so animals don’t get tangled up in it.)

Most of the participants, Maxcy noted, were local community members although there were a few from out of town.

“Together, volunteers of all ages collected approximately 25 full bags of trash throughout the area,” Maxcy said.

“We’re thankful to everyone who came out, rolled up their sleeves and helped make a difference in our community,” she added. “It was encouraging to see people come together for a cleaner Crestline.”

Maxcy extended her thanks to the Lake Gregory Yacht Club and the Lake Gregory Company for leading the way and to Goodwin’s Market, Sweet Pea’s, Crestline Café and Encompass for providing volunteer incentives.

As the volunteers turned in their bags of trash, vests and pickers, they were offered coupons from those participating businesses.

As a participant myself, I picked up countless cigarette butts, including a pile left by a picnic table behind the Crestline Chamber office. It appeared someone had emptied their ashtray there.
