The Crestline Lions Club is very busy these days, raising funds and then donating those funds to worthy projects. They held a food drive last month and distributed almost 50 bags of groceries to those who needed food. They also are currently seeking a student to receive their scholarship to be awarded during Senior Awards Night at Rim High in May.

Since the club has decided they will no longer be holding yard sales as they have over the past decades, their newest fundraiser is a “Mountain Summer Basket” which has a value of over $1900. It contains a wide variety of services, activities, gift and food items.

The top items in the Mountain Summer Basket include a two-night stay at the Lake Arrowhead Resort, two family four-packs to Lake Gregory, a Duffy boat ride and $200 worth of firewood, delivered. There are also two Shell gasoline cards in the basket, good at any Shell station. Included in the Summer Basket are dinner gift certificates to RB’s Steak House, Olive Garden, Applebee’s, McDonald’s, Higher Grounds Coffee House, and other gift certificates for snack goods and drinks and a certificate for $50 worth of locally fresh-made baked goods.

There are engraved glasses, wines and sparkling cider and gift items such as beach towels in a beach bag with sunscreen for summer fun, a custom-made cutting board from fine woods for your kitchen, plus they are adding additional items in the gift basket every week.  The basket already weighs over 40 pounds.

Each member of the club has gotten so many great gift items for the basket, they had to add an extra gift bag to contain the items overflowing from the basket. The last possible day to purchase a ticket is April 30. The tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from any Lions member, at their place of business, or contact President Catherine Johnson at (909) 338-5758. The Lions also plan on hosting sales booths with the basket on display at the Crestline post office, during good weather days, and at the senior lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The winning name will be drawn in front of the Lions attending the Lions district convention in Carlsbad on May 5.

Lions International collects used eye glasses for distribution to those who need them, as vision health and preservation is a top issue for them. Locally, if you have used eyeglasses taking up space at your home, you may donate them and know they will gratefully be used by those who need them. The Lions will have a person’s vision tested and then get them the correct eyeglass prescription for them.

In the mountain communities, anyone who is in need, needs glasses or is having vision problems may call the Crestline Lions Club and the club will pay to get their vision checked. The club is especially interested in children and their vision health, as children who cannot see well, cannot learn well.

During the March 30 Duck Derby, the Lions will be running one of the free duck games for the kids. On April 20, they will be involved in the Mountain Volunteer Recruitment Day at the San Moritz Lodge, and on April 25 they will be active at the Valley of Enchantment Science Fair Day. They also will be collecting soda can pull tabs for the last time this year for the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda, as the turn-in day is April 26.

The motto for Lions International is “We Serve” and the Crestline club takes that motto seriously and puts it into practice in all they do, whether for the local community or their international projects.
