The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Anthony Parnther, will present its second concert of its 95th season, “Revolutionaries.” The concert will take place on May 25 at 3 p.m. at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts.
“This will be an exciting and unique concert,” said Maestro Parnther. It will include two world premieres and what he called “some very special surprises.”
Dr. Fernando Arroyo
The symphony will introduce its first composer in residence – Dr. Fernando Arroyo. He was commissioned to write a new symphonic poem centered around the city of San Bernardino.
“Al Pie de La Montaña” – “At the Feet of the Mountain” – is a retrospective of the city from its early indigenous roots to the pioneers of the region, the 1920s, old Hollywood, the boom of the Black and Latino communities and a hopeful future with the idea of the mountains and the desert as two spirits watching over the town.
Dr. Arroyo received his bachelor of music and master of music degrees in composition from the Manhattan School; he received his PhD in composition at UCLA. His music has been performed throughout the world and ranges from solo instrumental works, chamber music and large symphonic works to film, theater and popular music.
Also premiering at this concert will be Andres Martin’s violin concerto, “Morgante,” which will be performed by Venezuelan violinist Samuel Vargas.
Raphaela Lacerda
In addition, Associate Conductor Raphaela Lacerda will take the podium to conduct “Danzon No. 2” by Mexico’s most esteemed living classical composer, Arturo Marquez. This piece is considered to be one of Marquez’s most beautiful and evocative pieces.
“Once again, Maestro Parnther has curated a concert that will exceed expectations,” said Donna Marie Minano, president of the symphony’s board of directors. “This is going to be an extremely exciting afternoon of music. I cannot wait to present this masterpiece to the entire community!”
