Law enforcement and fire personnel join the feast
The community of Green Valley Lake held a “Return From Evacuation” potluck gathering in the center of town, across from the lake on Saturday afternoon. The community celebrated the survival of the town from the Line Fire and the happy return of its residents from the mandatory evacuation that had been placed on the community.
The evacuation had been deemed essential since there is only one roadway out and into the small community and that was in the direction from which the fire was approaching. The community was protected by fire agencies who protected the communities of Running Springs and Arrowbear from burning, and the sheriff’s department was there to protect their property while the residents were gone.
The quickly organized small-town potluck event used borrowed tables from many community members, and the tables stretched from The Black Dog Social Club to the Community Garden. Everyone was welcomed. The food was plentiful as residents opened their hearts to each other and were glad to see their friends again. This was a very different scenario than after the 2007 Slide Fire, which torched many GVL homes and businesses. Some of the firefighters who were still in the area also attended. Fire trucks drove by during the pot luck to great applause from the residents.
There were fireman hats and sunglasses for the kids, and many adults wore them, too. Over 100 people attended the joyful afternoon event, which celebrated law enforcement and fire agencies.
