Updates from Caltrans on the 330 and 18

Oct 2, 2024 | Communities, Running Springs

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting the public that construction contractors will begin a $9,800,000 emergency project on State Route 330 (SR-330) to repair asphalt, slopes, drainage and guardrails, remove damaged trees and repair significant structural damage caused by the Line Fire.

Caltrans teams have been in the area assessing damages and coordinating recovery efforts. Six miles of SR-330 have been impacted by the Line Fire, and engineers have deemed those areas unsafe to travel.

At this time, SR-330 will remain fully closed in both directions from Highland Avenue to Live Oak Drive until contractor crews have completed the necessary repairs and until the road is determined safe to travel on. This reopening timeline is dependent on contractors receiving proper materials and equipment for each job function and is also dependent on weather conditions. Crews began conducting work as of Saturday, Sept. 21 in order to expedite the reopening of the state route.

Currently, the roadway is fully closed for the safety of both the public and crews on site. If traveling during closure hours, please plan to use State Route 18 (SR-18) from San Bernardino or State Route 38 (SR-38) from Mentone. This project is anticipated to be completed in 60 working days. Please adhere to all road closure signage to ensure the safe transport of equipment and crews. Be advised that weather and/or other factors may affect the construction schedule.

Winter work on Highway 18

Caltrans maintenance crews began a winter prep operation on SR-18 on Monday, Sept. 30. The work will continue through Oct. 17 and will take place Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This work will require a closure of the #2 lane on the downbound lanes from SR-138 to Waterman Canyon.

Following some pushback on Facebook on conducting this work while SR-330 is closed, Caltrans posted this clarification:

“This work we are doing is preventative maintenance work. This is to make the route better and safer during winter. This work cannot be pushed back or rescheduled. Winter is coming and we need to prepare.
“We are only closing one lane on SR-18. This work is imperative to get done now.”

Caltrans added the work includes “drainage cleaning, markers, slope cuts, clean cuts, embankment cleaning, weeds and guardrail work – if we can; we don’t want to affect traffic too much.”
