The past two weeks have been rather cosmic, what with the comet, followed by the so-called “Hunter’s Moon,” which was very large and bright in the night sky (like some people I know) and, finally, the so-called “Super Moon,” that was supposed to be very large (like some folks I know) and orange (unlike anyone I know). However, you couldn’t see any of the latter due to the thick cloud cover.
By the way, do you know what a tick on the moon is called? How about it, you with your hand raised… No, it’s not a clock, dummy, it’s a luna-tick… Ha, ha, ha.
Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup, they slither wildly as they slip across the Universe. Pools of yellow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind, pondering and caressing me. Jai guru deva, om. Nothing’s gonna change my world, nothing’s gonna change my world. (“Across The Universe” – John Lennon – 1969)
While the Hunter’s Moon was quite visible, when it comes to so-called “Comet Tsuchinshan,” it was less so. I caught my glimpse of the comet, which was encircling the planet we know as Earth for the last week or so, from the Red Rock Wall turnout on Highway 18, just past Baylis Park. The comet, which was seen to the right of Venus, was very faint but could be seen better with binoculars. In case you missed it, it will return in about 80,000 years, so don’t hold your breath.
On the other hand, Halley’s Comet was more visible in the night sky from the hanglider launch site on Playground Drive, near Cedarpines Park back in 1986. I can’t wait to see it again when it returns in mid-2061. Okay, here’s another one for you. What do planets like to read? No, silly, not planet books. They like to read comet books…Hardy, har, har, guffaw, snort, chortle. I got you on that one!
Images of broken light, which dance before me like a million eyes, they call me on and on, across the universe. Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letterbox, they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe. Ja guru, deva, om. Nothing’s gonna change my world, nothing’s gonna change my world.
I dunno, folks, John musta been smokin’ one of those funny looking cigarettes when he wrote that one.
Well, I’m sitting here at the stately Motley Manor, waiting for the power to go out again. I got a phone call from Edison at 6:30 this morning…I know what you’re thinking, you mean there’s a 6:30 in the morning too?
Anyhoo, they said, because the Santa Ana winds would be blowing hard that the power would be turned off most of the day today and tomorrow, so I topped off the gas tank and stocked up the fridge with ice. Like I always say, this would never happen, if they would bury their powerlines… flicker, flicker…zzzzt…uh, gotta go now.
Keep it…zzzt
