Even though it’s not considered polite to discuss religion or politics, especially in a mixed crowd, I feel compelled to do so today.
As for the recent election, I was rooting for Pedro…perhaps I should explain… Pedro was a young high school student in a 2004 award-winning film called Napolean Dynamite. In the movie, his parents and fellow classmates wanted him to run for class president.
In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been seen lately donning a T-shirt, just like the one Pedro wears in the movie that says, “Vote For Pedro.” It gets a lot of attention, and a lot of folks gave me a thumbs up and said they’re going to vote for Pedro, too. So, I told them that Pedro couldn’t be any worse than any of the other candidates that are running, but that I’m not going to mention any names because it could cause a riot….Hmmm, come to think of it, it already did.
Well, as you can see, Pedro didn’t make it. Despite the election results, there’s still hope for America. Folksinger/songwriter John Stewart wrote a song all about this.
He broke his back to put food on the table, in Columbus Ohio, he said to his wife. I believe that the flag it was more than a rag, but the outlaws in office have shattered my life. Can you hear me Ohio? you are the country, you are the nation, you will survive. Children in Cheyenne are taught in their schools believe in the country, don’t break any rules, but the TV is on and they know something’s wrong, someone must tell them to keep pushing on. Can you hear me Wyoming? you are the country, you are the nation, you will survive. Devils and angels belong in the church, you try for the best and you deal with the worst. Just keep on plugging you old nine to five for you are the heartbeat that keeps us alive. Can you hear me Virginia? You are the country, you are the nation, you will survive. Can you hear me California? You are the country, you are the nation, you will survive. (“Survivors” – John Stewart from the 1975 “Wingless Angels” album.)
John sang this, with the assistance of Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, Tommy and Dickie Smothers, Ringo Starr and a children’s chorus on the Smothers Brothers TV show, which was subsequently canceled by the outlaws in office on April 22, 1966. Think about it and keep pushing on.
Keep Old Glory flyin’,
