The several inches of snow the mountain received last weekend make for beautiful photos. There is the hope that the moisture will lessen the fire danger but San Bernardino County Fire Chief Dan Munsey has some wise words for us.
“This continual fire season has been so impactful to our communities and firefighters,” Chief Munsey said. “The Line Fire, the Bridge Fire, the Vista Fire and so many others have placed our communities in harm’s way. With the dry vegetation we have faced over this last year, this has been one of the most dangerous fire seasons I’ve experienced in my 29 years.
“I am so grateful for this snowfall. I am relieved that our very dry fire season is finally showing signs of slowing down. While I know the vegetation needs this sustained moisture to recover and prevent wildfires, I want to remind our communities that our danger is not over.
“We are in a new era of fire danger that will not be abated permanently by this snow. It will only be abated by good fuel management removing all vegetation that creates fire pathways into our communities and into our homes, fire resistive housing construction and maintaining our well-trained San Bernardino County firefighting workforce.”
