Last week many people in Crestline were talking about what appeared to them as the sudden closure of the Subway restaurant inside the entry to Rim Bowling and Entertainment Center. Then of course, speculation and fears extended to the Rim Bowling Center itself since they are both owned by the same family.
Do not be afraid, said owner Jodi Glaviano. The popular Rim Bowling Center, one of the few “inside and year-round family-friendly” activities on the mountain “is remaining open as long as I am here and I don’t intend on leaving. The bowling alley has not been sold, is not for sale and is not going to be sold.”
The Glaviano family has been very involved in the community for several dozen years. They were recognized and acted as the grand marshals of the Crestline Jamboree Days parade in 2015, so honored because of their many years of active involvement in the community over a decade ago. They have remained a vital community business since then.
Glaviano explained she was the franchisee who brought the Subway restaurant chain to the mountain communities about two decades ago. She opened the Subway restaurant in Lake Arrowhead Village, which she ran for over a decade year but closed several years ago. It was located where Jersey Mike’s is now.
Glaviano also opened the Subway at Five Points inside the gas station and ran that at the same time as the Subway restaurant in the village. She sold that franchise several years ago to the folks currently running that Subway. If anyone begins missing the Crestline Subway, they may drive just a bit farther to Agra Fria and get one of those familiar deli sandwiches.
After selling the Agua Fria Subway franchise, she was left with only the Crestline Subway inside Rim Bowling Lanes, which she has been successfully running for over a decade. The Crestline Subway, when she opened it at the bowling alley, replaced a previous cafe that had been there.

Rim Bowling and Entertainment Center has served the mountain communities for years and will continue to do so.
When they bought the bowling alley decades ago, it also had a pizza restaurant in it, but Glaviano wasn’t happy with the quality of those pizzas so she got a new recipe. Now Rim Bowling makes some of the best pizza in town, so much so that many people come in and take out those freshly made-to-order pizzas. They are a hidden, almost secret, pizza place in town. They also serve wings and, of course, hot dogs. Many diners do eat in their dining room, too, and some play their arcade games while they wait. They complement their pizza with salad, sodas, wine, beer or mixed selections from their full bar.
“I felt it was time for a change for many reasons,” said Glaviano. It was time for a new food choice as people’s tastes change over the decades. “I just hope that people will come and explore what comes next at that former Subway location, as I think they will be happily surprised.,” Glaviano said.
The Rim Bowling and Entertainment Center, located at 23991 Lake Drive in Lake Gregory Village, is open noon to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 8:30 p.m. on Sundays. As a full-service bowling alley, it has bowling shoes to rent and balls to use, or bowlers may bring their own.
Rim Bowling offers a night of league bowling each week, and open lanes many nights and afternoons. They offer parties for most any occasion, such as adaptive bowling for Rim Special Athletes and fundraising events for nonprofit groups, such as the annual fundraiser for the Rim of the World Educational Foundation. The Crestline Chamber of Commerce held a volunteer appreciation evening at Rim Bowling last month.
One of the big draws to Crestline’s Rim Bowling is the fact they have real and thick wooden bowling lanes to bowl on, not the composite lanes the newer bowling alleys use. According to serious bowlers, the real wood bowls differently than the composite. People have been known to come from all over Southern California to Crestline for the weekend, and some even from father away, just to bowl on their real wooden lanes.
“Rim Lanes is not going to close and will be here for the community,” Glaviano said. “Come enjoy a fun afternoon or evening of bowling.”
