Crestline woman arrested for stealing alcohol
On Nov. 5, 2024, California voters passed Proposition 36 titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” The proposition took effect on Dec. 18, 2024, and reforms multiple laws from Proposition 47, which have been responsible for increasing homelessness, drug addiction and theft.
Proposition 36 includes several new penal and health and safety codes that deputies will be able to apply during arrests when appropriate. These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance. The following is an arrest where Proposition 36 is applied:
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, at approximately 8:25 a.m., deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station responded to Goodwin’s Market, regarding a female suspect who was caught stealing a bottle of whiskey. A store employee stopped the suspect and she left the store. She later returned and consumed a different bottle of alcohol inside the store. Deputies responded but were unable to locate the suspect.
At approximately 1:41 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Goodwin’s Market again regarding the same female, disguised in different clothing, who stole another bottle of whiskey and exited the store. Deputies responded and located the suspect, later identified as Sali Medina, 48 of Crestline, a few blocks away from the market. Medina was in possession of the stolen bottle of whiskey.
The bottle was returned to the store and Medina was arrested and transported to the Central Detention Center, where she was booked for PC 666.1(a) – theft with two prior convictions.
