On Feb. 25, the Rotary Club of Lake Arrowhead had the distinct honor of having San Bernardino County Fire Chief Jason Serrano and Battalion Chief Sean Markey as guests. They provided an insightful overview of the San Bernardino County Fire service. During their presentation, they shared valuable information on a wide range of topics, including fire incident statistics, preparations for wildfires and common concerns regarding fire insurance.

Chief Serrano and Battalion Chief Markey began by outlining the scope and responsibilities of the San Bernardino County Fire Service, which covers vast areas with varying levels of risk. They shared the latest incident statistics, highlighting the challenges faced by the fire department in such a large and diverse region. Understanding these statistics is crucial for residents and the local community to grasp the fire service’s role and the necessity of proactive fire prevention strategies.

The discussion moved on to wildfire preparedness, a critical topic for residents in fire-prone areas. Chief Serrano and Battalion Chief Markey explained the ongoing efforts to reduce fire risk and improve response capabilities, especially as wildfires have become more frequent and intense. One of the key takeaways was the importance of creating defensible space around properties, ensuring that homes are well protected in the event of a fire.

Another crucial topic discussed was the Fire Risk Reduction Community List (FRRCL), which is mandated by Public Resources Code (PRC) 4290.1. This list includes local agencies located in areas with high fire hazard severity or state responsibility areas. These agencies are recognized for meeting the best practices in fire planning and mitigation.

Chief Serrano and Battalion Chief Markey emphasized the importance of this list, as it helps identify communities that are actively working to reduce fire risks and improve safety measures. Their dedication to protecting our community is truly commendable; we left the meeting with a greater understanding of the fire service’s work, as well as how we, as residents, can play a part in reducing fire risks and protecting our homes.

A remarkable point shared during the presentation was that Fire District 3 holds the distinction of having the largest fleet of any single fire and rescue agency in the United States. This impressive fleet enhances their ability to respond quickly and effectively to incidents across the vast county, ensuring that resources are available when and where they are needed most.
