Daryl Robert T. “Pappy” Carroll, born in Flint, Mich., in 1940 to Margaret and Joseph Carroll, passed away on June 6 gently in the night at Loma Linda VA hospital holding his wife Patty’s hand. He died of multiple organ failure.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Carroll, sisters Alma Lu Vasquez and Nora Dee Carroll, brother Wade Carroll, sons Christopher Carroll and Robbie Carroll, stepchildren Annette, Ron and Kathleen Zizio. He was a proud grandfather of eight children and four great-grandchildren.
Daryl served in both the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam and as an Army drill instructor.
Pappy was a mountain man par excellence, with knowledge of every mountain trail and secret fishing holes. Pappy was best known for his security work at Goodwin’s Market and his devoted service to the Marine Corps League. A security guard with Marine insignia was a clear deterrent to any shoplifters.
Known as the “Old Breed” in Marine Corps lingo, Pappy could weave a tale absent the Queen’s English, totally engaging his colleagues, while lending a spark of wit to all the Marine detachment meetings.
As one of the oldest Marines in the League, Daryl participated every year in the traditional cake cutting with the youngest and oldest Marine at the annual Marine Corps birthday event on the mountain. His genuine Mameluke sword for cutting the cake always added to the elevated protocol.
Daryl was clear to the bone a “Semper Fi” Marine who dearly loved singing a noted verse in the Marine Corps hymn:
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.
Services will be held Monday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 570 E. Highland Ave., San Bernardino. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside.
Donations graciously accepted by Patricia Carroll at P.O. Box 4023, Crestline, CA 92325.
