Crestline’s 46th annual Run Through the Pines 5k and10k races around the 2.7-mile perimeter of Lake Gregory on Saturday, Aug. 9 lured some 500 or more men, women and children, according to Rim of the World Recreation and Park District General Manager Jenny Hueter.
Rim High School bandmates participated in this year’s Run Through the Pines.
Hueter told the Alpine Mountaineer that 450 avid runners from throughout Southern California had already preregistered by 6:30 a.m. last Saturday and that she was expecting at least 50 or more late registrants by the 8 a.m. race time.
Having been launched in 1979, Run Through the Pines is one of the longest running events of its kind in Southern California. Both runners and walkers can enjoy a semi-paved course at a 4,720-foot elevation, which makes it an inviting run for physically fit locals and a bit of a challenge for down-the-hill folks.
Following an 8 a.m. Pledge of Allegiance and beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, hundreds of 10k runners came rushing through the starting gate to begin the first of two consecutive runs along the scenic, tree-lined trail around Lake Gregory.
Capturing first-place honors in the 10k competition was Anaheim resident Victor Cortez, who previously resided in Crestline for four years. Second-place honors went to Chino Hills resident Daniel Arteaga. Closer to home was Running Springs resident Morris Vanegas, who came in at 49th place, overall.
The Rim High School band was one of the top group entries, as was the community-based Empire Elite Running Club from San Bernardino.
Crestline’s own Gigi Bannister, who is a Rim of the World Recreation and Park District board member, hasn’t missed a Run Through the Pines since its inception in 1979.
