Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: California Bloodlines

Mar 16, 2026 | Uncle Mott

It’s time once again to reveal my all-time favorite songs. After careful consideration, I have chosen the following songs as my all-time favorites:

#1 California Bloodlines by John Stewart – Country rock from the singer/songwriter who wrote “Daydream Believer” for The Monkees and “Runaway Train” for Roseanne Cash.

#2 Darcy Farrow – John Denver, as well as Ian Matthews – Very sad story with a beautiful melody about a lady who falls off her horse.

#3 Rose of Cimarron – Poco – Wonderful country rock from a band that is a spin-off from Buffalo Springfield, with guitar, pedal steel guitar and violin.

#4 Amarillo By Morning – George Strait – Country with guitar and pedal steel guitar from one of the top country singer/songwriters in the country.

#5 Four Strong Winds – Neil Young – Beautiful melody with guitar and harmonica from a song originally written and performed by Canadian singers Ian and Sylvia.

#6 Hide it So Deep – Stephen Stills – From Stephen’s Manassas album, with beautiful melody and twangy pedal steel guitar.

#7 Drug Store Truck Driving Man – Gram Parsons – Twangy country song from a singer/songwriter who pairs with Emmylou Harris. This song speaks strongly against hatred of minorities. Gram passed away from an overdose of drugs in a motel room in Joshua Tree. His casket was removed from LAX airport and returned to Joshua Tree, where it was set on fire.

#8 – Aubry – Song written and performed by David Gates about a boy who is in love with a girl who only exists in his mind.

#9 – Long, Long Time – Linda Ronstadt – Beautiful song by a singer/songwriter with a well-trained and powerful voice.

#10 – Wasn’t Born to Follow – The Byrds – Roger McGuinn – Song about a biker opposed to discrimination played on a Rickenbacker 12 string guitar with a jingle-jangle sound.

There you have it, my top 10 songs at this moment. Of these 10 artists, I have seen several in concert, including John Stewart, John Denver, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Roger McGuinn, Linda Ronstadt and the members of Poco – Richie Furay, Jim Messina, Rusty Young and Timothy B Schmit.

See ya next week, same time, same station.

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott
