Caltrans will begin work on a $10 million culvert repair project on State Route 18 (SR 18) from 48th Street in San Bernardino to the State Route 138 Crestline Cutoff. This project is anticipated to begin Oct. 3, 2022, weather permitting.

This project will repair, realign or replace various culverts on SR 18. Work will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; some weekend or night work may be required to assist crews in traffic handling operations or in the event of an emergency situation. During construction hours, crews will have one lane closed in each direction near the work zone locations.

In mid-November, motorists should anticipate traffic switches where the speed limit will be lowered and traffic pushed into the opposite lane to maintain the one lane in each direction at the construction area while crews work on the opposite side of the road.

Traffic switches are when one or more lanes of traffic are moved into a different configuration to create space for construction activities. They are a vital element in the progression and safety of a construction project, and they create a safe work location for crews to remove and rebuild portions of existing overpasses.

The contractor, SUKUT Construction Inc., from Santa Ana, will begin placing construction signs, surveying and performing excavations beginning Oct. 3. The contractor will begin working closer to the bottom of the mountain, near 48th Street in San Bernardino.

Work is anticipated to be completed spring 2024 due to winter weather constraints.
