Almost a year and a half after Goodwin’s Market closed because the horrific snowstorm of March 2023 collapsed the store’s roof, the family-owned supermarket is having a grand reopening celebration and the public is invited to the party.
The celebration begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the entire Goodwin family on hand, and an introduction from Mike Johnstone, Goodwin’s vice president and store manager. Following that will be remarks from local dignitaries including Congressman Jay Obernolte; Armando Martinez representing the office of state Senator Rosilicie Ochoa-Bogh; Assemblyman Tom Lackey; and County Supervisor Dawn Rowe.
Following the ribbon cutting, the celebration will offer a range of treats for the public, including free hot dogs, plenty of food samples, a special 0.78-cent sale on many items throughout the store, free giveaways, free mini-ice cream cones and raffle prizes.
Why a 0.78 cent sale?
“Goodwin and Son’s first opened in 1946, and that’s 78 years ago, so we wanted to celebrate how long we’ve been serving the Crestline community,” Johnstone said.
And why the Aug. 23 date for the grand reopening?
“My grandfather, George Goodwin Jr., was born on Aug. 20, 1928, and we wanted to get close to his birthday to celebrate,” Johnstone explained. “It was George Jr., my grandfather, and his father, George Sr., my great-grandfather, who started Goodwin’s Market in 1946. We wanted to do something to honor his birthday with this grand reopening.”
Additionally, every hour Goodwin’s will be drawing for raffle prizes; everyone who attends will be given a raffle ticket. If no one comes forward to claim the raffle prize, tickets will continue to be drawn until someone wins.
There will be music and food vendors on hand to give away samples of their products.
Also on hand will be Mike Whisner, pastor at Twin Peaks Community Church, doing balloon art and there will be an exhibit of water color paintings.
“We’ll have some other fun surprises as well,” Johnstone added.
“We are excited to share this day with the community,” he said. “It is a day that represents our resilience, strength and healing from what our community endured last year. Goodwin’s Market and family are forever grateful for the unwavering support of the community throughout the past year and a half.”
