One holiday week that every young person – like me…OK, so I lied. Hey it’s all a matter of perspective and I perceive myself as being young, and every young person cherishes spring break, which springs into place on Monday, March 31 and comes to a screeching halt on Friday, April 4.
However, since there are two weekends involved here, it looks like the kids will have nine days of fun in the sun and frolicking in the sand to enjoy. Back in the day (the 60s) – oops, I think I just gave away my approximate age – we had 10 days of fun in the sun and frolicking in the sand. It was a high school and college kid’s dream come true, a rite of passage, if you will.
I remember my spring breaks like they were yesterday. When the bell at Tustin High School rang at 2:10 p.m., we rushed to the parking lot and hitched a ride on my buddy’s woodie to Newport or Huntington to check out the bikini-clad beach babes and hop on a surfboard, bound for a gnarly wave.
Surf City here we come. I bought a ’30 Ford wagon, and we call it a woodie, Surf City here we come, you know it’s not very cherry, it’s an oldie but a goodie, Surf City, here we come. Well, it ain’t got a back seat or a rear window, but it still gets me where I want to go, and we’re goin’ to Surf City to have some fun cause it’s two to one. Two girls for every boy. (“Surf City” – Jan & Dean – 1963 – penned by Brian Wilson)
My advice is don’t try surfing until you have a few lessons. Why, you ask? It’s ‘cuz I tried it once at The Wedge and nearly drowned. It’s almost as pathetic as the time I tried waterskiing at Big Bear Lake back in the summer of ’59 on an outing with the boys at Mill Creek Boys Ranch, when my parents got rid of me for four weeks. By the way, I nearly drowned that time as well.
Back in the ‘60s, on spring break, me and the boys in the hood would ride our bikes down to Corona Del Mar to gaze at the bikini-clad beach babes and go body surfing. I had better luck at that and, as you can see, I didn’t drown.
And we’re goin’ to Surf City, cause it’s two to one. You know we’re goin’ to Surf City, gonna have some fun, two girls for every boy.
Keep it flyin,’
Uncle Mott
