Dear Congressman Obernolte,
I read your website on a fairly frequent basis and do appreciate much of your work. As of this writing, however (April 11, 2025), I’ve seen nothing there on a number of issues that seem pretty important.
Since his inauguration, President Trump has upended the workings of the federal government, created uncertainty on the world stage and injected anxiety into our daily lives as Americans. He has halted Congressionally approved expenditures, violated civil protections of federal workers, defied court rulings and threatened impeachment of judges who rule against him, deported immigrants without due process, attacked universities and law firms, intimidated and banned media outlets and issued an executive order curtailing birthright citizenship, a Constitutionally guaranteed right. In the name of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, he looks to cut assistance to the poor, the elderly and veterans.
The list of such legally tenuous, ill-advised and harmful actions goes on and I won’t even bother to detail the uncharted economic waters into which he has thrown the entire world.
My point here is to request your take on it all. As our representative, you owe it to us to share your position on the direction that the president is taking our country. Your website indicates no plans for town halls (in-person or virtual) since the last one nearly two months ago. As we all know, much has happened since then and your silence implies tacit agreement with Mr. Trump’s orders, statements and actions. Rather than assume this to be the case, I invite you to publicly comment in this newspaper, on your website or on social media on the critical issues noted above, and others.
For my part, I seek your authentic thoughts and feelings, not the pat, cynical responses and talking points we have come to expect from many of our representatives. Now is the time for bottom-line truth. We can no longer afford anything less.
As your constituents, we deserve to know where you stand. Mr. Trump has no qualms about showing us who he is, and we need to know in this moment who you are, as well.
