Several mountain veterans recently enjoyed a day of fishing at Tavern Bay Beach Club. Cliff “Doc” Bennett, who founded the Rim of the World Veterans Outreach, shared these thoughts on the day.

We first were able to do this event about six years ago thanks to the amazing support from the Arrowhead Lake Association and the Fishing committee. The annual fishing event is a way to bring families out together with the veterans and other families to get to know each other and further relationships between each other, while sharing and learning about the sport from each other and specialists.

The first year we held the event, the Blue Star Moms came out and provided breakfast and coffee to our veterans and their families. We have had many people come out and support and help provide for this event. Some of the main support elements have been from Terrence Tinucci at Deep Creek Outfitters with help from some of his guides. Fly fishing is a fantastic way to clear your mind and focus while keeping both hands busy and making adjustments on the “fly.”

Another consistent supporter has been Lake Arrowhead Sporting Goods, who have provided us fishing tackle and gear for us to give away to our attendees every year. We have also had very big prizes from supporters like a new garage door and setup from Kustom Garage doors, one of our members and his family. The Lakefront Taproom and the Crestline Cafe have also been very gracious long-time supporters of this event and other needs of our veterans.

There have been so many people who have come together over the last few years to help us make this a special event for our veterans and families. One year we even had some local boat owners come and take some people out on the boats to fish further out on the lake.

We are grateful to everyone who helps support these events. On behalf of Rim Vets and our families, thank you for being an amazing community for our veterans and their families.
